Social Media Marketing- The Top 20 Social Media Sites that Can Impact Your Traffic
Filed under: Social Media Marketing Training, Social Media Training
There are many sites out there in social media and all of web 2.0 has some form of traffic. We as marketers are interested in social traffic, and where it can come from.
Many social media sites carry a TON of traffic and can send a lot your way, if you know the process of developing that traffic flow to your website. Knowing which sites are the most visited can add impact to your social networking and your traffic blueprint you have set up for your website and social media efforts.
I would suggest that you take a look at each site, and think about getting a presence on most of them if that fits into your current social strategy. Many people in one place can be a goldmine for you, if again, worked right and done correctly. As marketers, we need to be aware of where the traffic is, and where we need to be looking to connect with people, whether via blogs, videos, of friend pages.
I guarantee you that folks like Scott Monty, Chris Brogan, Shama Hyder, and Zna Trainer are on most of these sites- at least the ones that fit their social marketing plan.
How can a marketer use this information?
1) It tells you how much potential traffic that it can send your way with the proper plan set up.
2) It reveals which sites are actually a magnet for traffic and which ones are not. ( I thought Lycos was pretty much a former site of the 90’s. Boy was I wrong.)
3) It also lets you see the different types of social sites/software that are driving the numbers to their sites. (I was suprised that youtube was not on this list.)
Let’s get real here as well. Some of the sites, like netlog, are sites that are mainly populated with teenagers. Friendster mainly is populated with Asians, and Baidu is out of China. So know that there can be some restrictions to some of these sites in your marketing.
Here is a list of the top social media sites according to comscore. Comscore is a marketing research company that measures the digital world and trends that are evolving in the digital sphere. They are really good at what they do.
Top Social Media Sites (ranked by unique worldwide visitors November, 2008; comScore)
1. Blogger (222 million)
2. Facebook (200 million)
3. MySpace (126 million)
4. WordPress (114 million)
5. Windows Live Spaces (87 million)
6. Yahoo Geocities (69 million)
7. Flickr (64 million)
8. hi5 (58 million)
9. Orkut (46 million)
10. Six Apart (46 million)
11. Baidu Space (40 million)
12. Friendster (31 million)
13. 56.com (29 million)
14. Webs.com (24 million)
15. Bebo (24 million)
16. Scribd (23 million)
17. Lycos Tripod (23 million)
18. Tagged (22 million)
19. imeem (22 million)
20. Netlog (21 million)
Take a look at each site and see which one makes the most sense for you to be a part of, and then if you are not registered there, do that. Then start connecting with people there and learn the culture, as many sites have their own social culture, and then start to engage your social media marketing plan.

Hi Doug,
Blogger being one of the top ones makes a whole lot of sense. I just need to help the organization I intern at believe in it too. They seem to think that I shouldn’t be commenting on blogs. I believe that I should be doing it because it is a way to let the person know that you heard them and are listening.
Old School people are afraid of bloggers. They see them as Citizen journalists when in reality all they are is a voice in this world. Everyone has a voice and they should be heard… plus, if they are talking about you then you should be there commenting back.
I guess people don’t understand the power of a comment.

Does Twitter not count?
Great article. I believe that social media is so powerful and is the new trend in internet marketing. It’s where the web is going, but many people have yet to catch on.
FYI: Numbers 4 and 5 share a link. There isn’t a link to WordPress
Tell me what you're thinking...
